Why AirPods sound bad during calls on a Mac
When a call app uses your AirPods' microphone, Bluetooth switches from high-quality stereo to a headset mode with low-quality mono audio. Everything you hear gets tinny, not only the call. Use your Mac's built-in mic for calls and the AirPods stay at full quality. CallLane locks the input to your Mac's mic so this happens on every call.
What’s going on
Bluetooth headphones have two ways to talk to your Mac. One is for listening: stereo, high quality, no mic. The other is the headset mode: the mic works, but the sound coming back drops to narrow, mono audio that sounds like an old phone line. The connection can’t do both at once. Apple says that once an app uses the headphone mic, audio quality and volume are reduced.
When AirPods connect, macOS makes them the input too, so the call app uses their mic. The AirPods switch to headset mode, and your music, the film you’re watching and the call all sound bad together.
The manual fix
- Open System Settings, then Sound, then Input.
- Pick your Mac’s built-in microphone.
- In each call app, pick the built-in mic too. In FaceTime it’s in the Video menu, under Microphone.
The catch: macOS often switches back to the AirPods mic the next time they connect, and you’re back in headset mode on your next call.
The automatic fix
CallLane locks the input to the mic you choose, usually the Mac’s own, and puts it back whenever macOS tries to switch. Your AirPods stay in listening mode on every call. The MacBook mic sounds better than the AirPods mic in headset mode anyway.
It also stops macOS from turning your other audio down during calls, which is the other half of the problem. More on audio ducking.
This works for any Bluetooth headphones that drop to headset quality when their mic turns on, AirPods included. Wired headphones don’t have the problem.
Questions
Why do my AirPods sound worse when I'm on a call on my Mac?
The call app uses the AirPods' microphone, which forces Bluetooth into a headset mode with low-quality mono audio for everything you hear.
How do I keep AirPods at high quality during a call on Mac?
Use the Mac's built-in microphone as the input instead of the AirPods mic. CallLane locks the input to the Mac mic so macOS doesn't switch it back.
Does this happen with other Bluetooth headphones?
Yes. Most Bluetooth headphones drop to headset quality when their mic is in use. Wired headphones don't.
