WhatsApp calls make everything else quiet on a Mac. Here's the fix.

By Hardeep Singh, maker of CallLane · Updated

The WhatsApp Mac app uses Apple's voice processing during calls, and macOS lowers all other audio by about 20 dB while a call is on. WhatsApp has no setting to stop it. Send the call to its own output device and the rest of your audio keeps its volume. CallLane does this for WhatsApp, FaceTime, Zoom, Teams, Slack and Discord.

Why WhatsApp ducks your audio

WhatsApp for Mac cancels echo with the same voice processing FaceTime uses. When it starts, macOS ducks every other sound: your playlist, a video you’re watching together, a game. It’s the Mac doing it, so reinstalling WhatsApp or changing its notification settings won’t change anything.

How to stop it

  1. Install CallLane and run its setup.
  2. In WhatsApp, open Settings, then Calls, then Speaker, and pick CallLane as the speaker. You do this once.
  3. Make a call and play something. It stays at full volume.

CallLane forwards the call to your real headphones or speakers, so you hear it as usual. Only the call gets ducked, and you set its level from the menu bar.

Bluetooth headphones on WhatsApp calls

With AirPods or other Bluetooth headphones, a WhatsApp call also turns on the headphones’ mic. That drops the whole connection to headset quality, so music sounds flat and tinny. CallLane keeps the input on your Mac’s mic, so your headphones stay at full quality. Why that happens.

Questions

Why does a WhatsApp call lower my music on Mac?

WhatsApp for Mac uses Apple's voice processing for echo cancellation, and macOS lowers all other audio by about 20 dB while it is active.

Can I stop WhatsApp from lowering other audio on Mac?

Not from WhatsApp's settings. Picking a separate output device for WhatsApp calls, such as the CallLane device, keeps the rest of your audio at full volume.
