SoundSource vs CallLane: per-app audio vs call ducking on a Mac
SoundSource is a full per-app volume, effects and routing tool; CallLane does one narrower job: it stops calls from ducking your music and locks your Mac's input so AirPods stay in high quality. Rogue Amoeba doesn't advertise SoundSource as a fix for call ducking. If you need per-app EQ, AirPlay or output groups, SoundSource does far more.
I make CallLane, so weigh this with that in mind. Checked on against SoundSource product page, SoundSource store page and SoundSource manual, Permissions.
SoundSource and CallLane side by side
| Feature | SoundSource | CallLane |
|---|---|---|
| Price model | $49 one-time license; free trial with limits | One-time purchase, 14-day refund |
| macOS requirement | SoundSource 6: macOS 15 to 27. Version 5 is offered for older macOS | macOS 14 or later, Apple silicon and Intel |
| Stops call ducking | Not advertised | Yes. Call apps play into the CallLane device, so macOS ducks only the call |
| Keeps AirPods out of headset mode (mic lock) | Not advertised. You can change the system input from its menu | Yes, for apps that follow the system input. Lock input keeps the system input on the Mac's mic (or a USB mic) and puts it back if macOS or an app moves it. An app set to the AirPods mic directly needs switching to System default once |
| Signed and notarized | Not stated on its product page | Yes, signed and notarized installer |
| Open source | No | The audio driver is (GPL-3, derived from BlackHole); the app is not |
| Extra setup | Install its ARK plugin (admin password), then allow system audio and microphone access | Admin password once for the driver, then pick CallLane as the speaker in each call app, once per app |
When to pick SoundSource
- You want volume, output and effects for each app: a 10-band EQ, Audio Units, Headphone EQ.
- You stream single apps to AirPlay speakers or play to several outputs at once.
- You want one mature audio control app from a long-standing Mac audio company, with a free trial.
When to pick CallLane
- Your problem is that calls turn your music down. That is the one job CallLane is built for.
- Your AirPods drop to headset quality on calls. CallLane locks the system input to the Mac's mic, which call apps on their default setting follow.
- You're on macOS 14. SoundSource 6 needs macOS 15; CallLane runs on macOS 14 or later.
- You use SoundSource already. CallLane doesn't replace it; keep SoundSource for per-app volume and effects.
